REVIEW: Avery Odio Equum

I'm doing my damnedest to get this blog back on some kind of schedule. We'll get there. I've tried in the bast to get into sour ales. I quite liked Duchesse Du Bourgogne, I was less fond of Uinta's Birthday Suit. I think it's fair to call my experience with sours a mixed bag. I'm not one to let a momentary setback get in between me and an entire segment of the craft beer world. Especially when I'm staring at a bottle from one of my all time favorite breweries. Avery's Odio Equum is a 7.1% ABV sour brewed with raspberries and aged for an entire year in cabernet sauvignon barrels. To the beer!

REVIEW: Avery The Reverend

A while back I lamented that, with my look at The Czar, I had officially run out of beers from Avery's Dictators series beers to talk about. What I forgot though, is that there's a whole other series of wonderful beers from Avery, the Holy Trinity of Ales. In that series are, Hog Heaven, a heavily hopped barleywine, Salvation, a Belgian style golden ale, and the beer I'll be talking about today, The Reverend a 10% ABV Belgian style quad. I'm always a fan of a big, dark, malty Belgian style beer, so I'm pretty excited to give this one a try. To the beer!

REVIEW: Avery Twenty

In the year and change since I've been doing this blog I've had the chance to try three of Avery's anniversary beers. First Eighteen, a rye saison, and Nineteen, a Belgian style tripel. This year is a pretty big year for Avery. Although, for a brewery, is the twentieth anniversary the big one, or do they hold off on the huge celebrations for the twenty first anniversary? Hmm. Well, whatever the case may be, twenty years of brewing excellent beer is an accomplishment to be applauded. So, I raise this glass full of dry-hopped imperial IPA to the folks at Avery. REVIEW: Avery The Czar

Today's beer is the third in Avery's Dictator Series. The first that I looked at, The Maharaja, is one of my favorite beers of all time. The second, The Kaiser, was a delicious Imperial Oktoberfest lager that I enjoyed quite a bit. Go check those old reviews out if you haven't already. Those are some great beers. But all of that brings us to the final beer in the series, The Czar. An 11.1%, 55 IBU, beast of a Russian Imperial Stout. I know I'm excited. To the beer!

REVIEW: Avery DuganA

This has been quite a week here on the blog. One of my all time favorite beers bookended by two big imperial IPAs. Today's beer, DuganA, is from one of my favorite breweries, Avery. Their Maharaja is probably the best beer I've ever had so this one has a lot to live up to. When I sit down to an imperial IPA from Avery I have a certain set of expectations. DuganA is berrewed with two-row barley, dark aromatic, and caramel malt, and Chinook, Centennial and Columbus hops. It clocks in at 8.5% ABV and 93 IBUs. Sounds right up my alley. To the beer!

REVIEW: Avery The Kaiser

Well, today is a bit of a milestone. Today's post here is the 100th since starting this humble little blog back in January. A couple weeks ago I started thinking about whether or not I should try to do something special for this centennial post. It kind of snuck up on me so I wasn't able to get too nuts with this. But as this blog is all about talking about beer, I figured a good way to celebrate this 100th post would be to talk about a cool beer. Today's beer, The Kaiser, is the second in Avery's Dictator Series. The first Dictator I looked at, The Maharaja, is one of my all time favorite beers. I have high hopes for this one. I've been trying to find a fresh bottle of this Imperial Oktoberfest Lager for years. Oh yeah, I've been resisting the fall seasonals for weeks. But seeing as Oktoberfest Zinzinnati is next weekend (I can't wait!) I figure it's time to finally get into the swing of things. To the beer!

REVIEW: Avery Nineteen

Right off the bat. I must apologize for the lateness of today's post. Time sort of got away from me this morning and I ran out of time to write today's post before work. So, sorry about that. But better late than never, right? Today's beer is Avery Brewing's Nineteenth anniversary ale. I looked at the dry hopped rye saison that they brewed in celebration of their eighteenth year a few months ago. You can check that one out here. I'm a big fan of Avery and I'm always excited to check out new special brews from them. This one is a Belgian style tripel. To the beer!

REVIEW: Avery The Maharaja

This is a special one today. This here is one of my favorites, if not my very favorite beer of all time. The  Maharaja. One of the biggest, best, hoppiest imperial IPAs you will ever come across. And for me it doesn't get much better. This particular bottle comes from release 16 from spring of 2012, so pretty fresh! This beast of a beer clocks in at a hefty 10.17% ABV and a ludicrous 102 IBUs. To the beer!

REVIEW: Avery Eighteen

Belgian style beers are kind of a bind spot for me in terms of being able to talk intelligently about them. Not that I don't enjoy them, I certainly do, but they're just very different than the ales and lagers that I'm used to. It's just a completely different set of flavors and aromas. Belgian yeast is a whole different animal. There's a set of flavors in most English and American style beers (pale ales, stouts, porters, IPAs) that I'm familiar with, that I can pick out. Belgian ales present a whole new set of flavors and with them, a new set of challenges. Today I'm reviewing Avery's Eighteen. A dry-hopped rye saison. A saison is a belgian style farmhouse ale. But dry-hopped and rye, those are things I'm familiar with, I can wrap my head around that. Maybe I'll be able to figure this beer out after all. To the beer!
