REVIEW: People's Mr. Brown
It feels like it's been a while since I've had a big malty beer. For whatever reason that's what I was craving last night. Luckily, I had this bottle hiding in the deep recesses of my refrigerator. So, let's see what Mr. Brown from People's Brewing has to offer. To the beer!
Mr. Brown doesn't really pour brown at all. In fact, it's really a deep, almost completely opaque black. Much more stout-like in appearance than what I was expecting. It's topped by a finger of tan head that persists pretty well.
Surprisingly, an earthy herbal hop character wafts it's way up from the glass before I get a sense of any of the malty goings on. The malt is certainly there, I'm just a bit caught off guard that it takes a back seat. The maltiness does manifest as a very nice chocolatiness. It's bready, almost cake like with a little bit of milk chocolate and a little bit of dark. Everything seems very English style. I dig it.
So far that beer's aromas and look have been outside of exactly what I was expecting. Do the flavors keep up the trend. Only one way to find out, fair reader! Mr. Brown is medium to full in body. Semisweet chocolate and a light coffee roastiness and bitterness lead the way. It's nice and hearty. A robust bitterness comes in at the end and livens things up but unfortunately, I'm not sure if it quite lands. Everything is tasty, sweet, hearty, and enjoyable but the lingering bitterness comes of a bit harsh.
I'm left a bit disappointed here. Mr. Brown is a solid brown ale, but that weird bitterness is kind of a fly in the ointment.
