REVIEW: Jackie O's Chomo-Lung-Ma
More beer from Jackie O's! This one has a pretty cool story behind it. Chomolungma is the Tibetan name for Mt. Everest. The brother of Jackie O's owner summited the unforgiving peak as part of an effort to raise money and awareness for lung cancer, hence Jackie O's unique hyphenated version of the name. But anyway, Chomo-Lung-Ma is a 6.5% ABV brown ale. Let's get to it. To the beer!
Chomo-Lung-Ma pours a deep, nearly opaque ruddy brown. It's topped by two fingers of finely bubbled off white head that recedes to a persistent thin layer that leaves plenty of spidery lacing.
Aromas of light roasty chocolate comprised of a nice mix of sweet milk chocolate and some more dry powdery cocoa notes make up the majority of the nose. Herbal, earthy floral notes, and a lively yet subtle fruitiness add a bit of complexity.
This one is surprisingly light in body. Not that it's insubstantial, but it definitely doesn't sit heavily on the palate. It does possess a nice creaminess though. A robust, lively, bitterness comes out swinging first. Floral, herbal hop flavors are joined by a nutty maltiness. A slightly sweet chocolate character comes out before the clean, moderately crisp finish.
Not a bad beer! Much in the same way as the Firefly Amber I looked at the other day this is a very approachable, tasty beer. It won't knock your socks off, but it absolutely won't disappoint either. Jackie O's brews some good stuff. I have heard tale of a very good Russian Imperial from them. That one I will have to keep my eye out for.
