REVIEW: Jackie O's Firefly Amber
This post is going up awfully late in the day. If you've been just sitting on your computer hitting refresh all day waiting for my thoughts on beer I apologize. Wait, no I don't. That would be ridiculous. And you deserve the reaming you're bound to receive from your boss tomorrow for skipping that big presentation to stay home and wait on me. What was I talking about? Yes. Beer. That's it. Jackie O's has been around in Athens, Ohio for years but has only recently begun canning their beers and even more recently have those beers become available in Cincinnati. What better beer of their's to start with than what they refer to as their "gateway ale," Firefly Amber. To the beer!
Firefly is a very pretty beer. A beautiful shade of bronzed amber topped by a finger of bubbly white head. The head recedes fairly quickly to a persistent rim that leaves some spotty lacing on the way down.
The aromas are pretty simple on this one. Toasty, bready caramel malt along with a very subtle herbal, floral hop character.
Firefly is light in body. The flavors lead with toasty notes of caramel, toffee, and just a touch of something near, but not quite exactly, roastiness. A little bit of burnt sugar maybe? The malt flavors give way to a subtle hop derived fruitiness comprised of grapefruit, apple, and lemon. Firefly finishes with a nice cleansing bitterness.
I like this one. Sessionable and drinkable at a meager 4.5% ABV but still possessing of a robust and interesting set of flavors. I'll definitely be returning to Firefly Amber.
