REVIEW: Revolution Repo Man
So Chicago's Revolution brewing has very quickly shot up the ranks of my favorite breweries. Not only are their core canned offerings very tasty, but they have a whole array of bottled beers that are just a bit more out there. As is the case with today's beer. Repo Man, a 6.2% ABV Rye Stout. Which, kind of shockingly, is a style of stout I don't believe I've ever come across. Sounds pretty tasty! Let's not waste any more time. To the beer!
Repo Man pours an inky, opaque black topped by a tall frothy layer of tan head that leaves tan colored lacing on the way down.
I definitely pick up plenty of rye on the nose. A peppery, earthy, rustic, spiciness contrasts against the much more subtle roasted grain notes of faint coffee and dark chocolate. There's a subtle herbal fruitiness in there as well that adds to the almost black IPA-ishness of the nose.
Repo Man leads with mild roasty flavors of coffee and dark chocolate. The rye comes in afterwards to add a spicy earthiness and an outstanding balance. There are some slight vanilla and toffee notes in there as well adding some complexity. Sweet chocolate comes in on the finish and lingers.
I know it doesn't seem like I said a whole lot about the flavors there but don't take that as a dig. Repo Man is a fairly simple beer, it does have an understated complexity, it certainly isn't boring. But the roasty stouty flavors and the spicy earthy rye are so exceptionally balanced that I can't harp on any lack of complexity. This is a great little stout. Remarkably drinkable, approachable, and the addition of the rye adds just the right amount of interest to keep me coming back for each next sip. Seek this one out.
