Starkbier Fest 2013
So this past weekend was Listermann's Starkbier fest. Sort of a companion piece to the Craft Beer Oktoberfest they put on back in the fall. And just like last time, chock full of delicious craft beer brewed right here in Cincinnati. My girlfriend, Meredith and I headed down Saturday afternoon and met up with friends to enjoy some beer and the sunshine. (I know, weird right??) To the beer!
Listermann must have some kind of deal with the devil going on. Saturday was the only nice day we've had in weeks. Beautiful sunshine, warm, a nice breeze. As I sit here typing there's snow falling. Hard to remember that just a couple of days ago I was sipping beers in the sunshine. As a result of the weather, the tent that they had erected to protect from the cold and precipitation wasn't getting a whole lot of use. People were grabbing beers inside and heading back outside. And there sure were a whole lot of people. Word must have gotten out that the Craft Beer Oktoberfest was a good time.
The Craft Oktoberfest didn't really have a theme. Just a bunch of Cincinnati brewers and good Cincinnati beer. Starkbier though, was all about big, strong beers. Warms your heart just thinking about it right? I started things off with a beer from the newest kids on the block, Mad Tree and their Identity Crisis, a big hopped porter that I enjoyed immensely. Next I moved on to an Imperial IPA from Fifty West called Punch You in the EyePA. Finally I had what might've been my favorite beer of the day, the new Belgian quad from Mt. Carmel, the newest beer in their Snapshot Series. It was pretty tremendous.
The only drawback to a festival pouring nothing but strong beers is that you can't enjoy too many and then drive home responsibly. I hope I can get full reviews of each of these up on the blog at some point. I also hope Listermann's keeps these festivals up. We've got Starkbier in the spring, Oktoberfest in the fall, as I see it, that leaves us with two seasons without festivals. Get on it guys!
