REVIEW: Lake of Bays Crosswind

Before making it a point to actually go seeking out Canadian craft beer I had never heard of a lot of these breweries. Just goes to show you how big the craft beer world is. There are tons of local and regional breweries that you would have no idea existed if you didn't travel to their home turf or get a heads up from somebody there who is in the know. Enter today's beer, Crosswind, a pale ale from Lake of Bays Brewing. To the beer!

Crosswind pours a perfectly clear pale gold topped by a couple of fingers of bubbly bone white head.

The aromas here are pretty underwhelming. A bit of sweet crackery malt and a touch of floral hops. Everything's a bit grainy.

Unfortunately, the flavors mimic the aromas pretty closely. Crosswind is very light in body with a prety nice subtle creaminess. Faint lemony citrus hints play alongside very light, subtly sweet malt flavors. There's a little bit of an earthy thing going on here, but it's not really enough to add what I could really even call complexity.

There's nothing really offensively bad about this beer. But there's also nothing really going on period. Everything from the look, to the aromas, to the flavor is just sort of overwhelming. Also, this beer is certainly pale, and it's definitely an ale, but a pale ale? That seems to be a bit of a stretch. Even if you're going by English standards. I wouldn't turn down a Crosswind if somebody handed me one, but I for sure wouldn't go out and buy it again. There are much better options for your money.
