REVIEW: Sun King Sunlight Cream Ale
If you just check the blog every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday you missed a special post I did yesterday in celebration of International IPA Day. I took a look at Double-Wide, a terrific imperial IPA from Boulevard Brewing. If you missed it, check it out. Otherwise, read on!
Back to Sun King. Loyal readers of the blog will remember that not too long ago I talked quite a bit about Indianapolis' Sun King Brewing and a few of their tasty beers. If you missed out on those, check them out here. Today's beer is another one I picked up in Indy last weekend, their Sunlight Cream Ale, which Sun King bills as their most approachable beer. I had a taste of this beer when I visited Sun King's taproom but this is my first time sitting down with the beer proper. To the beer!
Sunlight pours an absolutely straw colored pale yellow. It's capped off by a finger of bubbly white head that recedes fairly quickly. A note on the photo here: This one came out kind of strange, as you can tell. I had to go with a fairly long exposure time as I shot it pretty late in the evening. I'm not exactly sure why it turned out the way it did but I think it's kind of cool looking. The reflection and the refraction through the glass create a really bizarre effect. Enough of my babbling though, back to your regularly scheduled program.
With the aromas on this beer you definitely pick up on the cereal grains but not much else. It's kind of one note there.
Fortunately the flavors are much more interesting than the aromas. Sunlight Cream Ale is crisp, smooth, and very light bodied but still bigger than your average pale lager. It has a nice full round sweetness. A very light fruitiness adds to what is a pretty deceptively complex beer. Finishes clean with a nice crisp hop bite. Very sessionable, very drinkable.
Sun King isn't kidding when they say this is an approachable beer. This is an ale for lager drinkers. I could see this as being a great gateway into the world of craft beer for the uninitiated.
