REVIEW: Country Boy Session Wheat

I wrapped up my time in Cincinnati with a look at a Cincinnati beer. It seems only appropriate to begin my time in Lexington with a Lexington beer. Poetic even. My girlfriend Meredith and I headed over to Country Boy to grab a couple beers, watch a few innings of the Reds, and come home with a growler. I snagged 64 oz. of the beer you see above, Session Wheat. No need to waste any more time. To the beer!

Session Wheat pours a hazy brassy golden amber, A shade or two lighter than I was expecting to be honest. It's topped by a finger of loosely bubbled white head that recedes pretty quickly.

The aromas on this one are pretty interesting. Instead of the fruity notes I was expecting from a wheat malty notes of baking bread lead the way. Clove spiciness joins in with caramel sweetness. The fruitiness finally comes through in a subtle yet very complex way. Hints of banana, berry, pear, and apple. Quite a nice set of aromas here. Quite nice indeed.

Session Wheat is light in body and very drinkable. Things start off with a caramel maltiness that is complimented by a wheat sweetness. Spicy clove notes come in afterwards alongside a really enjoyable dry biscuity malt. Just like on the nose the fruitiness comes in towards the end in a subtle and complex way with flavors of pear, apple, and banana.

All in all this is one pretty terrific, and unique wheat beer. Drinkable, light, and refreshing, but quite intersting. The malty complexity almost gives it an ESBish quality. Lexington folks, you would do awfully well to give this one a look.
