REVIEW: Oskar Blues Gubna
Alright. Back to talkin' 'bout beer. One of the few thing in this world I actually feel completely comfortable and qualified doing. Well that, and talking about video games and comics and movies and baseball and other such nonsense. There's a marketable set of skills if I've ever seen one! Today we're looking at Gubna, a 10% ABV 100+ IBU monster of an imperial IPA. It's been a while since I looked at an Oskar Blues beer. Not since I did a week of them back when they first were starting to distribute to Ohio. But enough time has passed. To the beer!
Gubna pours a beautifully clear coppery amber in color underneath a massive fluffy layer of off white head that leaves some great lacing on the way down. Very pretty.
Massive, aromatic, resinous, dank hops are all over the place here. Some citrusy notes of orange, grapefruit are in there as well. All of those hop derived aromas are contrasted against tons of robust toffee malts and a bit of a spicy peppery hint.
Gubna is awfully full bodied and nice and creamy. Resinous, piney hops and robust toffee maltiness lead the way. This beer tastes quite rich for an IPA. Hints of caramel and a little bit of vanilla and some delicate citrusy notes of grapefruit and tangerine add complexity. There's also a slight spiciness and a bit of a floral honey sweetness. For as astronomical as the IBUs are the bitterness is very measured. It finishes with a crisp bite and a mild lingering bitterness. The ABV is only felt as a subtle warming way after the finish.
On the first few sips I wasn't quite wild about this beer, but as it warmed and opened up I started to become really impressed with it. Quite tasty, and awfully quaffable for such a big beer. This one is well worth checking out. Just note that it definitely isn't the cheapest beer. If you do pick some up, just make sure you take it out of the fridge 15 or 20 minutes before you crack it open. Have a great Memorial Day weekend, folks!
