REVIEW: MadTree PsycHOPathy
So the first two MadTree beers I've looked at this week have both been pretty great. The hearty, robust Gnarly Brown and the interesting and tasty Happy Amber. That just leaves us with PsycHOPathy. A 6.9% ABV India pale ale, which has quickly become my go to beer down at Great American Ball Park. Let's not waste any more time. To the beer!
PsycHOPathy pours a perfectly clear vibrant, polished coppery gold. The quite pretty brew is topped by a finger of loosely bubbled bright white head that leaves rings of sticky lacing on the way down.
On the aromas, tons of fresh piney scents burst out of the top of the tulip glass. Quite a bit of resinous hop aromas as well as a nice fruity citrus presence of grapefruit and tangerine. Alongside all of that hoppiness is a rather pronounced toasty, slightly biscuity caramel malt. All in all, a very balanced nose.
So we've got a very pretty beer that smells just how a good American IPA ought to smell. I'd say we're off to quite a start.
PsycHOPathy is fairly light in body with a great creamy mouthfeel. The flavors lead right off the bat with punchy citrusy fruit flavors of grapefruit, tangerine, an a bit of lemon. Very crisp. While it does possess a nice bracing bitterness PsycHOPathy is very balanced. A very dry biscuity toasty caramel malt evens everything out.
PsycHOPathy isn't brewed with any strange ingredients. It isn't imperial, or 10%, or barrel aged, or anything like that. It's a pretty simple, straightforward American IPA. But it is a damn fantastic simple, straightforward American IPA. Flavorful, balanced, drinkable, expertly crafted. This beer is Two Hearted good. My hat is off to you, MadTree. Well done indeed.
