REVIEW: Heavy Seas the Big DIPA
I've taken a look at a lot of Heavy Seas beer in my time on the blog, but not any of their limited releases. Not sure why. I'm a fan of what they do, but their limited release beers have never really jumped off the shelves. Well, it ends today. What we have here is a 10.5% imperial IPA aged on oak spirals. I'm game. To the beer!
The Big DIPA pours a quite beautiful crystal clear vibrant coppery amber. It's topped by two fingers of dense, frothy, resilient off white head that leaves some lovely lacing.
Piney, resiny, herbal hop aromas are backed by intense oaky notes of vanilla and caramel which give the beer a borderline bourbon like nose. There's a robust toffee malt note here as well.
The Big DIPA is full bodied and quite creamy. Toffee malt flavors as well as notes of caramel and woody oak take the lead on the palate. Piney resiny hop sbalance things out and make for an astonishingly balanced and easy drinking 10.5% ABV beer. It finishes with a lovely little bit of vanilla and a slight lingering bitterness.
I quite like this one. But then again, I'm an easy mark for a good imperial IPA. But one that's this flavorful yet well balanced and drinkable, especially considering the hefty ABV is an impressive feat indeed. If a big oak aged IPA is something in your wheel house you'll definitely appreciate this one.
