REVIEW: Bell's Oarsman Ale

More spring beer! The weather has cooled off since, but a couple of days ago it was downright hot. The weather had me craving something lighter and refreshing. So I turned to a bottle from one of the best. Oarsman Ale from Bell's, a sessionable Berliner weissbier. I didn't quite care for the first Berliner weissber that I had here on this blog, Dogfish Head's Festina Peche. But this is Bell's and I'm willing to give anything they brew a shot. Let's get to it. To the beer!

Oarsman pours a pale, quite cloudy yellow gold. That towering fluffy layer of bone white foam recedes pretty quickly.

A bit of a lactic sourness leads the way ahead of a light powdery citric lemon. There's a bit of a grassy herbal hop in here as well. We're off to an interesting start here. Light, subtle, but that sourness has me intrigued.

Oarsman is light in body with the interesting combination of a nice creaminess with a great crispness as well. The real story here is the tart, sour bite. It's not overpowering, but it does add a bit of a pucker. It makes everything very dry, very refreshing. There's a lovely powdery lemon flavor in here too alongside a grassy hop character.

I'm not sure if it's because Oarsman is so atypical than what we usually see in spring beers, but I really like this one. Unique, light, very refreshing, and that tart, dry, crisp finish keeps me coming back for each next sip. I think Oarsman may be one of my new favorite seasonals. Give this one a try.
