REVIEW: Triple Digit Gravitator

So Bockfest was this weekend. I went and had a great time, but I didn't really feel like there was enough there to warrant a blog post. But I didn't want to let the weekend pass without taking a look at one of my favorite beer styles, the venerable doppelbock. The biggest and maltiest of all of the lagers. This one is from Cincinnati's own Triple Digit Brewing whose beers I have been on the hunt for since being blown away by Chickow! Let's not waste any more time. To the beer!

Gravitator appears quite dark and opaque at first glance. But when held to light a cloudy deep scarlet concoction is revealed. Two fingers of dense, finely bubbled head leaves some spotty lacing.

The aromas are made up of rich caramel and toffee. Adding to a rather nice complexity are notes of candied sugar, vanilla, some roasty/ burnt grain, a faint hint of cinnamon, and a bit of rum like boozy heat.

Gravitator is full bodied and quite creamy. A bready/ toasty caramel malt body is joined by big flavors of toffee and vanilla. That cinnamon I detected on the nose returns here in a subtle but interesting way. There's also an ever so faint roasty iced coffee hint that adds just a touch of roastiness. Also quite a bit of nuttiness alongside dark fruit complexity with flavors of plum and raisin. A bit of boozy hit hits on the finish, but it's pretty negligible, especially considering that Gravitator checks in at 10.5% ABV.

Triple Digit has impressed me again. This beer is astonishingly drinkable for how strong it is. Most importantly though, it's delicious. Malty, sweet, full, complex. Pretty lovely.
