REVIEW: Revolution Anti-Hero IPA
Another new beer from Chicago's Revolution Brewing today. This time their Anti-Hero IPA. Let's just take a moment to appreciate the terrific art on that can. A four star hop general with an eye patch, and hop paratroopers! Add to that the lovely, limited color palate and big chunky typography. I love it. To the beer!
Anti-Hero pours a vivid, polished, brassy gold. It's clear, and topped by a loosely bubbled layer of bone white head that as it recedes, leaves great spidery lacing.
Big piney, resinous, slightly oily hop aromas burst straight out of the glass. There's a strong toasty/ biscuity malt presence there as well. Some nice citrusy notes join in too with hints of lemon and grapefruit.
First things first, the creaminess of this beer is exceptional. As far as I'm concerned it's the showpiece of this beer. It rolls silkily across the tongue and creates a fantastically unique texture and mouthfeel. Sweeping in on that creamy body are huge piney, grassy, floral, and quite dry hop flavors. Sweetness comes in quickly afterwards in the form of a biscuity caramel/ toffee malt and citrusy notes of of tangerine and grapefruit. The bitterness here is assertive, without ever being harsh.
This is a pretty terrific IPA. Incredibly well balanced, with plenty of fresh bitter hops, and a robust maltiness. Incredibly enjoyable. But man, that creaminess really sets this one apart. Very unique. This one is a must try.
