REVIEW: Sixpoint Apollo
I believe my love for Sixpoint's beers ought to be quite clear by this point. I can't seem to go to the liquor store anymore without coming home with one of their four packs. Case in point: today's offering, Sixpoint's Summer seasonal, Apollo. A Bavarian style Kristallweizen. A very cool video of showing the inception of and inspiration behind the beer, as well as Sixpoint's founder and brewmaster heading over to Germany to drink and find the perfect authentic yeast, can be found here. Highly recommended viewing. Well, does Apollo stack up with the rest of the great beers from Sixpoint? One way to find out. To the beer!
Apollo pours a hazy orange color capped by a thick layer of white head. Lots of effervescent bubbles hint at some robust carbonation.
The aromas on this beer are quite nice. Zesty spicy yeastiness, backed by some tart fruitiness. Notes of banana, tangerine, and grapefruit. It's all backed by a bit of a clove aroma. Good and complex.
OK, Sixoint put together a hell of a summer ale here. Refreshingly tart with a pretty light body, but very full flavor. Tons of delicious fruity flavors here: banana, citrusy bits of orange and grapefruit. It also has a great spicy zestiness from the authentic Bavarian yeast. The hops on Apollo take a real backseat. They're here for balance, not much in the way of hop flavor or bitterness. Apollo is very drinkable, very summery.
I tweeted the other weekend that I preferred Sweet Action over Apollo as a Summer beer from Sixpoint. That is in no way an indictment of Apollo, my tastes just skew that way, German Weissbiers just aren't my favorite. Apollo is a great beer. Really drinkable, really flavorful, light, refreshing, and damn tasty. It just so happens that Sixpoint has two pretty outstanding Summer beers.
